BMW workers in Britain have overwhelmingly voted to go on strike over what they are calling “pensions robbery”.

Up to 3,500 staff at the German car maker’s plants Mini plant in Oxford, Rolls-Royce base in Sussex, and engine and parts factories in Swindon and Birmingham could walk out as a result.

The row is over BMW’s plans to close the company’s final salary pension which unions claim could see worker’s retirement packages reduced by as much as £160,000.

Union Unite said 93pc of votes were in favour of strike action with a turnout for the ballot of 72pc.
