Car review: 2017 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro – The Salinas Californian
Recently I had the chance to spend a week test driving a 2017 Audi A4 sedan and have to say I really enjoyed the experience.
My tester, which came in a beautiful moonlight blue metallic, was a joy to drive. With this car Audi is definitely going to convince a lot of folks that it is a worthy competitor in the luxury sports sedan segment.
From the outside I liked the A4’s understated but “don’t mess with me” looks. They were simple, clean and yet eye-catching.
Under the hood in my tester was a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine that develops 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
From a cold standing start I was able to get to 60 mph in just under six seconds.
My tester’s engine was mated to a smooth shifting seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The A4, as expected, handles like a dream and dives into corners and curves with gusto and a minimum of body roll
In the neatly laid out cabin you find controls logically and intuitively placed. You’ll also find a “Drive Select” controller offering the driver rides in normal, sport, etc. For maximum fun take my suggestion and keep it in sport.
My tester, which carried Audi’s “Prestige Package” trimline, came with monster 19 inch sport aluminum alloy wheels. Trust me, you’ll grow used to having them.
In terms of mileage my tester delivered 27 mpg combined city and highway. In the city I received just 24 mpg while out on the highway alone I got 31 mpg.
Bottom line: I really like the understated looks of the A4. This baby competes head to head with the likes of the BMW 3 series, the Mercedes-Benz C-class, Volvo’s S60 and Cadillac’s ATS.
My recommendation? Get out there and do some shopping and test driving. My guess is that you’ll find yourself heading back to the Audi dealer before the end of the day. Have fun!
