STAN: HOW LONG DO YOU THINK YOU COMMUTER PARKING GARAGE, WITHOUT IT BEING TOWED? DONNA: TONIGHT, THE 11 NEWS EYE TEAM DISCOVERS VEHICLES LEFT F MONTHS, POSSIBLY YEARS, ANNOYING TO SOME COMMUTERS, BUT IS IT A PUBLIC SAFTETY ISSUE NEWS EYE TEAM REPORTER BARRY SIMMS INVESTIGATES. WE DISCOVERED IT AND SEVERAL OTHER VEHICLES JUST SITTING HERE ALL APPARENTLY ABANDONED THE GARAGE IS NOT FAR FROM BWI THURGOOD MARSHALL AIRPOR AND A FEW FEET AWAY FROM WHERE AMTRAK AND MARC TRAINS STOP. COMMUTERS ARE KEEPING TRACK OF SCRIBBLING DATES AND OTHER MESSAGES IN THE DUST AND GRIME . WANTING TO GET THE VEHICLES MOVE >> ONE OF THE THINGS I’VE NOTICED OVER TIME IS CARS PARKED THERE FOR WEEKS AND THEN MONTHS AND MONTHS AT A TIME BARRY: COMMUTER BOB SCANLON WE TOOK A RIDE THROUGH THE GARAGE AND FOUND FOUR CARS. THE DATES SCRAWLED IN THE THE DUST ON THIS 1993 FORD TEMPO YEARS. ALONG WITH COMMUTERS, WHO ELSE KNOWS IT’S HERE? MARYLAND TRANSIT ADMINISTRATION POLICE. THEY PUT A WARNING ON IT LAST OCTOBE >> THE CAR HAS A FLAT TIRE, A TIRE THAT GOING FLAT. THERE ARE NO LICENSE PLATES ON IT IT SAYS, HEY POLICE, NOVEMBER 3RD. BARRY: A NISSAN ROGUE WITH VIRGINIA PLATES ALSO HASN’T MOVED IN A LONG TIME. RIGHT NEXT TO IT, A HONDA ACCORD WITH NO PLATES. THIS MERCURY VILLAGER MINIVAN NO TAGS HERE EITHER. MTA POLICE PUT WARNINGS ON THE VILLAGER AND THE ACCORD FOUR MONTHS AGO EARLY IN THE MORNING AND SPACES ARE AT A PREMIUM IN THE MORNING. IT’S FRUSTRATING TO GO IN AND REALIZE THESE ABANDONED CARS ARE TAKING UP SPACES BARRY: WHY DIDN’T MTA POLICE GET THEM TOWED AWAY? WE REPEATEDLY REQUESTED AN ON CAMERA INTERVIEW. THE MTA SAID N BARRY: OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES TELL US ABANDONED ARE INVESTIGATED IMMEDIATELY CHECKED TO SEE IF THEY ARE AND IF AN OWNER DOESN’T REMOVE THE VEHICLE IT’S TOWED WITHIN TWO DAYS THE MTA’S OWN POLICY ALSO CALLS FOR TOWING OF ABANDONED VEHICLES AFTER 48 HOURS IN A WRITTEN STATEMENT, THE MTA SAYS WE ARE INVESTIGATING THE ISSUE AND WILL TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IF WE ASCERTAIN POLICY WAS NOT FOLLOWED. IS THIS JUST AN ANNOYANC FOR COMMUTERS OR ARE THERE SAFETY ISSUES HERE >> I THINK THERE ARE SAFETY ISSUES THERE BARRY: PROFESSOR MICHAEL GREENBERGER IS DIRECTOR OF THE FOR HEALTH AND HOMELAND SECURITY.
