These Are The Best New Auto Models of 2016 – Forbes
What are the best new car models of 2016? If you ask some fifty North American journalists, the list shakes out to the following: the all new Chevy Bolt EV; the Genesis G90, Hyundai’s new luxury car to kick off its new luxury division; and the Volvo S90 sedan.
On the truck side, the Ford F-Series Super Duty, Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Titan pickups will vie for North American Truck of the Year. And among the new utility vehicles, comprising full-sized SUVs, minivans and crossovers, the contenders are the Chrysler Pacifica, Jaguar F-Pace and Mazda CX-9.
These nine vehicles are contending for three honors as top car, truck and utility vehicle of the year. The awards will be handed out at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.
The Chevy Bolt can be said to break some new ground as it is the first electric vehicle priced under $40,000 to get above 200 miles of range. The Chevy hatchback seems to be this year’s award show darling, having won MotorTrend’s car of the Year and Green Car Journal’s Green Car of the Year. It was also named to Car & Driver’s Top ten list.
The G90 is one of two vehicles Hyundai is merchandising at special boutiques at Hyundai dealerships branded Genesis. Before Hyundai decided to bust out the luxury strategy with its own name, Genesis was the name of the sedan and coupe that Hyundai aimed at taking on BMW. Genesis’ plan is to offer a sedan that is similarly equipped as a Lexus LS400, but at a price that is far more digestible than Lexus’s $88,000 LS460 with all-wheel-drive. By and large it has succeeded if you are wiling to adopt the Genesis badge.
The Volvo S90 is a much overdo and needed replacement to Volvo’s previous S80. Now owned by Chinese automaker Geely, there was an expectation that Volvo would not live up to its safe-and-solid reputation. The opposite is true. The S90 is actually far better than the previous sedan brought under Ford Motor Co.’s ownership of Volvo. It’s time to check out Volvo again.
