Law enforcement officers are searching for a driver who managed to evade New Jersey State Police, speed through the Holland Tunnel, crash into a SoHo art gallery, and fled to parts unknown in the early morning hours Tuesday.

According to New Jersey State Police, a patrol car with its lights and sirens on attempted to pull over a white X5 BMW for a traffic violation shortly before 2 a.m. as it sped down Interstate 78, but called off their pursuit when the driver entered the Holland Tunnel.

After entering New York City minutes later, the BMW driver crashed into a parked Corvette and finally slammed into the front door of Eden Fine Art, near the intersection of Greene and Broome Streets in SoHo. Police sources told NBC the crash broke the windshield of the BMW and left the front of the car “completely mangled” with its hood wrapped around a pillar, while the Corvette’s top was completely broken off.

Moments after the crash, the BMW driver was seen fleeing westbound on Broome Street, NBC reports.

“I came out and saw the white Corvette had parts all over the street. The driver was still behind the wheel. He had a cut on his face and was grabbing his neck,” nearby resident Robin Mamotyuk, 21, told DNAinfo.

A 28-year-old man who had been inside the smashed Corvette was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, CBS notes. The network also reports the wrecked BMW had been previously reported as stolen in Berkeley Heights, NJ. A New Jersey State Police spokesperson told Gothamist the missing driver is believed to be injured, and a task force is searching the surrounding area. No arrests have yet been made.
