A few days later nine British citizens were detained in Alicante in the possession of 250 marijuana plants and six stolen vehicles.

In recent days, seven more suspects from Britain and Spain have been arrested in a series of raids in Malaga and Barcelona, also turning up 30 mainly top-of-the-range cars, one of which was found to have 55 kilograms of hashish concealed in secret compartments.

In total, around 300 kilos of cannabis has been impounded plus some £121,400 and €99,000 (£85,000) in cash.

Some cars were not used for smuggling purposes and ended up being sold in third countries, such as Portugal and Italy, police investigators said.
