President Barack Obama is opening a three-day trip to India aimed at turning his personal chemistry with the country’s leader into policy breakthroughs.

Air Force One touched down in New Delhi Sunday morning. Obama was to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi (nah-REN’-drah MOH’-dee) and lay a wreath at a memorial honoring India’s independence hero Mahatma Gandhi.

The centerpiece of Obama’s visit will be his attendance Monday as the guest of honor at the annual Republic Day parade. The festivities mark the day in 1950 when India’s democratic constitution came into force.

However, the White House announced that Obama will skip plans to visit India’s famed Taj Mahal on Tuesday. Instead, he’ll travel to Saudi Arabia to pay his respects following the death of King Abdullah.
