KUSA – The hail that pummeled parts of the Denver metro Monday put people to work on Tuesday.

Some auto shops were expected to stay open late to fix dozens of broken windshields and back windows.

“We’re kind of in the catastrophe mode,” Tom Johnson said, quality manager for Safelite AutoGlass. “We’re actually setting up mobile units in the parking lot next door so that we can actually service everything.”

There were about 80 repairs scheduled Tuesday at the Safelite location at west 1st Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. The work spilled over into the PetSmart parking lot which quickly filled up with banged up cars.

“Basically it’s organized chaos,” Johnson said.

Inside the shop, Carol Williams greeted a long line of customers that at times, stretched out the front door.

“Hi. How are you?” Carol asked one customer. “Not too good,” the customer replied. “We’re going to make you better,” Carol said.

Carol was the friendly face on a difficult day for many in the metro whose cars were damaged in Monday’s storm.

“We just stood there and watched as our cars were completely annihilated in the storm,” Sarajane Gomez said.

Gomez lost the back window of her Subaru thanks to the hailstones that fell in Golden. She also happens to be an insurance agent – a reminder that no one was immune to the severe weather in Colorado.

“It even happens to insurance agents!” Gomez said with a laugh. “We live in Colorado and this is just part of our culture. We have hail and wind here and that’s the beauty of living next to the mountains.”

The Safelite AutoGlass in Lakewood typically closes at 5:00 p.m., but staff expected to be working into Tuesday night.

“We’re trying to service everybody as evenly as we can,” Tom Johnson told customers waiting in line.

In addition to the 80 cars scheduled for service Tuesday, Safelite staff told 9NEWS 90 were scheduled for Wednesday.
