The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s office now confirms a 55 gallon drum in the BMW plant parking lot was not a bomb.

Authorities were alerted to a suspicious package in the parking lot just before 6 p.m. Friday, because of a chlorine smell, and investigators believed the package was a bomb around 6:30 p.m.

According to deputies, the 55-gallon drum with wires coming out of it was found next to a car in lot D of the parking lot.

Just after 7 p.m. Friday, Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright announced the drum was not a bomb and was actually a water purification system.

The sheriff said after the bomb squad arrived and started investigating the drum, its owner arrived to tell officials what it actually was.

BMW was on lockdown during the investigation, but the lockdown has been lifted.

WYFF News 4 has a crew at the scene and will continue to update this story as more details become available. Continue to refresh this page for the latest details.
