Thieves use high-tech devices to hack into cars in Westminster – KABC-TV

Thieves using high-tech methods to break into cars struck in Westminster recently, entering and ransacking several vehicles with little effort.

Surveillance video shows three people breaking into cars without smashing windows. The victims said they had left their vehicles locked.

Police say it appears the suspects used technology that allowed them to amplify the signal from a car’s key fob, kept in a home nearby, to unlock the doors.

Westminster police say it’s the first time they’ve seen the technology used in their city. Back in 2013, Long Beach experienced similar break-ins.

Police say one way to protect yourself is to keep your key fob wrapped in some kind of metal or aluminum foil while at home.

There are also companies that make devices to protect key fob signals.

If you recognize the suspects in the surveillance video, please call the Westminster Police Department.
