To be fair, these numbers have their vagaries (the totals do not necessarily represent sales to consumers, but often just production), yet Volkswagen is very happy with the special attention. The prominence may come as a surprise to American consumers. Though the other global manufacturers in the list’s top three spots—Toyota and General Motors—both regularly maintain similar top-tier market positions in the U.S., VW has always struggled here. Last year the Volkswagen Group of America—which includes Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, and VW—was number eight in sales, with almost 600,000 vehicles. But not only was that total number below the single niche brand of Subaru, which sold 615,000 vehicles, it represented a huge gap below the next closest manufacturer, Hyundai/Kia, which sold nearly 1.5 million.
