DETROIT (WWJ) – The Martin Luther King holiday, combined with dry weather, brought large crowds to the North American International Auto Show for the third consecutive day. And, for the most part, people liked what they saw.

“As you walk in, the displays are so bright, you just get it full with excitement and anticipation,” said Angela Tolbert of Detroit.

Show Chairman Bob Shuman said more than a hundred thousand people were at Cobo for both the first and second day, putting opening weekend attendance slightly above 2013 levels.

“The cars are fantastic, the exhibits are works of art, and the weather cooperated,” said Shuman. “The real beneficiaries are the people who made it to the show this weekend. They experienced the absolute best that a healthy auto industry has to offer.”

Chevrolet’s Corvette display gathered a large crowd of enthusiasts, as did Ford’s auto plant like display housing the new F-150. The new Mustang was also popular, and large crowds turned up among the shows extensive number of luxury vehicles.

There are more displays, says Shuman, designed to educate and entertain than at previous shows.

“The Detroit show has become a sensory extravaganza with spectacular new vehicles at the center of it all.”

The younger attendees, who had the day off from school, enjoyed the “sensory extravaganza”, gathering around the many video games. It was a bit tougher for small children. Sean Kizer of Waterford brought his three youngsters.

“It’s an interesting experience,” he said. “The later in the day, the more people who are here, the more difficult it is.”

But, Kizer said he was just following a tradition started by his father.

“My dad was bringing me here since I was five years old. I’ve been coming every year.”
