The 2016 Honda Classic is set to resume for second-round action after a wacky first round on Thursday. From winds measuring as high as 25 mph to territorial birds, there was plenty of intrigue in the opening round at Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
Sergio Garcia and Michael Thompson sit atop the leaderboard at -5, and both will tee off early in the morning on Friday (Garcia at 7:35 a.m. ET, Thompson at 8:15). Garcia holed out from the fairway for eagle on No. 2 and put together a clean, efficient opening round after that with just one plus number — a bogey at the par-4 sixth (where he also had to watch his back during his second shot because of a nearby alligator).
After missing the cut in his first tournament of the season at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club last week, Sergio produced his first below-par round and his first tournament lead of 2016 in Palm Beach Gardens. Michael Thompson, who won his first PGA Tour event at the 2013 Honda Classic, accessed some of those good vibes and also put up an excellent first-round 65.
World No. 3 Rory McIlroy didn’t have a bad day, but sits well behind the leaders in a mass of players tied at 65th with a 2-over 72 on the first day. After an up-and-down front nine that put him +1, it seemed McIlroy had righted the ship after two-straight birdies on 12 and 13 to go under par.
But after finding a couple different bunkers on his way to a double-bogey on the 14th, Rory finished his round +3 on the last five holes: despite a birdie on the par-3 15th, he carded bogeys on both the 16th and the 18th (an always-frustrating three-putt bogey on a par 5). Rory will try to get back on track in his 7:45 a.m. Friday pairing with last year’s Honda Classic champion Padraig Harrington and last year’s British Open champion Zach Johnson. Ricky Fowler (-4), William McGirt (-4), Jason Dufner (-2) and Phil Mickelson (-1) are solidly in the hunt after the first day of action.
