Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes Announced – IGN
Disney has announced Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, a new “2.0 Edition” game launching in 2014 on all previous platforms (Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and mobile), in addition to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Your saves from Disney Infinity on Xbox 360 or PS3 will transfer to the respective new consoles, Disney confirmed to IGN. All characters, Power Discs, and Toy Boxes from Disney Infinity 1.0 are compatible with 2.0, developer Avalanche confirmed. The Starter Pack comes with Thor, Black Widow, Iron Man, and a mysterious crystal shard piece, and discs that add dungeon-crawler and tower-defense game modes. Disney estimates that Disney Infinity will retail for $75 in a package that includes the Starter Pack.
More play sets, both Marvel and other Disney-themed characters, will come to Disney Infinity 2.0. 80 new Power Discs are coming, and bringing new features, such as team-ups.
Hawkeye, Hulk, Winter Soldier, Iron Patriot, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Loki, Spider-Man, MODOK, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and more will star. Indeed, Disney Infinity is adding The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more will join the cast of Disney’s creative sandbox game.
Now, Disney Infinity is “moving forward with the second phase,” Agents of SHIELD star Clark Gregg said in a presentation. His Agent Coulson character’s Lola vehicle will be added to the game as well. The level cap has been raised to 20, and there will be major improvements to the Toy Box gameplay, including procedurally generated brushes that build cities, race tracks, and more. Builder characters add castles, caves, trees, and more to your world, which you can edit at any time. Interior design joins the broader outdoor world design in Disney Infinity 2.0 as well.
Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis is involved in writing the story for the Marvel Super Heroes 2.0 update. “This game could do for this generation what comics did for us,” he said. Marvel Manhattan (including Avengers Tower) is the new setting, and it will be 4x larger than The Incredibles play set. Flight and super-jumps play a major role, so developer Avalanche needed to up the ante in terms of size for player exploration.
Abilities and a customizable skill-tree play into this as well. Hulk, for example, can crawl on walls, jump from on building to the next, and more. In terms of combat, Avalanche wanted players to feel powerful while balancing accessibility and depth. Black Widow is a fast “ranged melee” class, allowing her to close gaps and cover groups at the expense of fragility. Thor and Captain America are strong brawlers with ranged skills, while Hawkeye’s bow gives him the ranged advantage with some melee moves.
More than 3 million Disney Infinity Starter Packs have been sold, Disney’s Jimmy Pitaro said. “Disney Infinity has outperformed our competition in terms of total sales revenue,” he continued. Toy sales grew more than 79% in the final two months of 2013, Pitaro explained.
