WEST PALM BEACH (CBS12) — Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is a the center of a controversy, just days after forming an exploratory committee to run for president.
Carson told CNN’s Chris Cuomo Wednesday that being gay is a choice.
“Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight,” said Carson. “And when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? said Carson.
Carson told CNN the argument thwarts the notion that homosexuality isn’t a choice.
The majority of the medical community, including the American Psychological Association said “most people experience little or no sense of choice about their sexual orientation.”
Carson also believes the issue of allowing or restricting same-sex marriage should be decided at the state level, rather than in federal courts.
The U.S. Supreme Court is taking up the case this spring that could legalize gay marriage nationwide.GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson stirs controversy with comment on gays
