If you thought a 10-speed transmission had as many gears as any car could possibly need, we have bad news. Honda has filed a patent for a transmission that has 11 gears. And it doesn’t stop there. This new transmission also has three clutches. You know, because why wouldn’t you need an 11-speed triple-clutch transmission?
Uncovered by AutoGuide, the Japanese patent describes how the third clutch will be used to reduce the drop in torque that you get with a dual-clutch transmission. Theoretically, that would also mean faster gear changes. And with 11 gears, the engine would presumably be better-able to get improved fuel economy, as well.
But what’s not clear is where (or if) Honda will use this new transmission. The emphasis on improving gas mileage could lend itself to everything from an economy car like the Fit to a larger vehicle in need of an MPG boost like the Pilot. Or it could find its way into the entire Honda lineup.
So while we don’t know much, we’re looking forward to hearing more. Hopefully, it’ll make it into production eventually.
