Honda’s hatchback 2017 Civic keeps its concept look, gives a peek at the Type-R – Digital Trends

The Honda Civic hatchback that debuted as a lightly disguised concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show is heading to the U.S. this fall.

With styling only slightly changed from that original concept car, the 2017 Honda Civic hatchback will join the coupe and sedan as the third body style in Honda’s 10th-generation Civic lineup, and the first five-door Civic hatchback ever sold in the U.S. It will also form the basis for a sporty Civic Type-R model down the road, Honda says.

While it is a new model, the hatchback should look somewhat familiar by now. It was teased by both the Geneva concept and some teaser photos Honda recently released showing cars being loaded on a ship for transport to the U.S. Aside from its rear hatch, the styling largely resembles that of the other two Civic variants, incorporating a fairly sleek roofline and Honda’s new corporate grille.

The hatchback will be offered in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims, all of which come with Honda’s 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine is shared with the Civic coupe and sedan, but the hatchback doesn’t get the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four available in lower-end versions of those models. The hatchback will be available with six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions, becoming the first Civic model to offer the turbo engine with a manual.

In LX, EX, and EX-L models, the engine makes the same 174 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque it does in the Civic coupe and sedan. But the Sport and Sport Touring models get a boost to 180 hp, and 162 lb-ft., thanks in part to a wicked-looking, freer-flowing center-exit exhaust.

Honda also confirmed that the hatchback will be the basis for the next Civic Type-R, which will be sold in the U.S. for the first time. Rumor has it this hot hatchback will have upward of 340hp. Honda will also offer a Civic Si model, which will likely be less extreme than the Type-R, and could use the coupe or sedan body styles.
