TOKYO—Japanese auto makers are preparing to ship more cars to North America from Japan to take advantage of the yen’s weakness, after years of moving production to local markets.

Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. both plan to increase shipments from Japan to the U.S., their biggest market. That means auto exports to the U.S., which fell 4% during the first five months of this year, could start to rise in coming months.
